Elevator owners are receiving proposals from contractors to accomplish guarding of their elevator machinery, as well as the construction of safety railings on elevator car tops. There is some confusion as to the implementation date of these requirements. To clarify, car top railings are a definitive new requirement as mandated by TSSA. In contrast, guarding of elevator machines, particularly from shear hazards and high-voltage hazards, is not a new rule at all, but is a rethinking of existing OHSA machinery guidelines. Both issues are discussed in more detail in the article section of this website.
