TSSA Safety Order 260/14 regarding car apron plates applies to existing elevator installations. This Director’s Safety Order applies to all passenger elevators that:
- Have an Elevating Devices Installation Number of 33700 or lower (usually elevators originally installed circa 1982 or earlier); and,
- Operates in an apartment building, condominium, or educational institution.
This Safety Order is being issued to address the exposure to a fall hazard, as well as prevent the possibility of self-rescue by restricting egress from a car not at or near the floor for the building occupancies described.
For all elevator installations you own that have an Elevating Devices Installation Number of 33700 or lower (earlier):
If the existing apron plate is confirmed to be 1200 mm (48″) or greater, apply a sticker to the crosshead of the elevator car sling in the vicinity of the cross head data tag that is permanently attached and marked with the text “Meets 3.10 of CAD 261/13 Apron Plate Requirement”, in letters not less than 6 mm (0.25″). Contractors may obtain these stickers from TSSA at no charge via a request sent to email@example.com. Compliance for the installation of these stickers, indicating Code compliance, is mandated by November 31, 2014.
If the existing apron plate is confirmed to be less 1200 mm (+/- 3″) and not in conformance with the attached Safety Order, it should be replaced or modified.
