Elevator free fall due to the ropes/wires failing is a staple of Hollywood movies and therefore creeps into the fears of persons who are nervous on elevators. However the reality is this is very, very, rare. So it is with surprise we read about complete suspension rope failure of a LULA (basically a small slow elevator) in BC.
It seems the condition developed over time and was unnoticed – until failure. Luckily a secondary safety system kicked in to halt the falling elevator, otherwise disaster would have been the result. The safety authority in BC does a great job in documenting these kinds of things, and we link below.
