Most elevator owners in Ontario have been made aware by the provincial safety authority, TSSA, that is their responsibility to ensure minimum elevator safety tests have been logged.  However, this can be confusing to the site staff who are often told by the elevator service mechanics that the elevator machine room is off limits to anyone other than elevator personnel. On one, hand the room can be considered accessible to anyone who is duly authorized by the owner, but on the other hand persons should not enter this room unless they have been trained in the hazards associated with the machine room – high-voltage, shear hazards, etc.

We would suggest that the elevator logbook be given a holder directly inside the elevator machine room door.  That way, building personnel can verify the log on a monthly basis without stepping very far into the machine room.
